Joana Tubal

Lisboa, Portugal

Creative expression found painter Joana Tubal early. Born in the autumn of 1987, in Lisbon, the artist grew up exploring the streets of this city using different means to illustrate her ideas until she found her vehicle of excellence in painting — and in traditional costumes a fertile theme.

With a degree in Design from IADE (Institute of Visual Arts, Design and Marketing), Joana Tubal began by exploring the world around her through the camera. This was followed by a postgraduate degree in Photography and Contemporary Art, at the Lisbon Atelier and, later, a master’s degree in Photography at the Royal Academy des Beaux Arts, a reference in creative education in Brussels.

Photography was the beginning of a passionate study of the world around him. Through this medium, the artist felt able to represent an immeasurable reality in just a few images, telling a story that would otherwise not be possible to illustrate.

Joana Tubal has always approached her photography work in a multi-disciplinary way, borrowing many of its elements from painting. “I still need to find a way to create photographic art that goes beyond the camera,” he said one day about a project he started in Brussels.

Painting has always been at his side, but in 2018 they joined hands on an exclusive journey that began in India, where he moved with his family.

At that moment, photography took a back seat as it did not allow the necessary scope to capture the colors of his new country of residence. “Living in a country that is culturally rich but has so many problems makes us think about life differently. That’s why I decided to put that feeling aside and look for color,” explained Joana Tubal.

The incandescent costumes worn by Indian women were the beginning of a project that has already gone around the world. In this series of paintings, where color and geometric shapes reign, the artist celebrates the importance of clothing, not as a means that allows us to warm up and protect ourselves from the cold but as a vehicle that promotes feelings of belonging and community, and the role of women in establishing these bonds.
